Regional planning connects the dots The changing role of regional planning commissions The days of regional planning commissions acting as traditional transportation agencies—fulfilling their federally mandated duties as a metropolitan planning organization—are fading. Today’s RPCs, organizations perfectly positioned as regional conveners, are tackling growth from a holistic viewpoint, tying transportation, land use, sustainability and economic development together through coordinated planning efforts. This regional planning platform is being fueled by federal interagency cooperation, the Sustainable Communities Initiative, and the Livable Communities Act of 2009.
