Central Ohio Region
With one office based in Columbus, ACP has assisted this community—the 15th largest city in the nation—with a variety of planning initiatives through the direction of various government and community organizations.
Regional Connections
The Central Ohio Regional Growth Study ACP worked with the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission to develop the Central Ohio Regional Growth Strategy, an inclusive effort that offers a bold vision for the future of the central Ohio region with a clear framework for implementation to steadily turn the vision into reality. A comprehensive investigation into the powerful trends impacting the region and extensive public involvement were combined to prepare tools for local communities.
Highlights:
- ACP facilitated a 60-member Steering Committee, with representation from all seven counties, and incorporated the broad interests of 203 jurisdictions that comprise the region.
- A Land Use model was used to create the scenarios that reflect the existing land use and plans for all communities in the region. The scenarios depict a range of potential futures—from “continuing the trend” to aggressive inward growth.
- A Conceptual Development Framework was developed to provide a graphic depiction of the Vision for Place.
- Three sites were identified and illustrative development concepts were prepared to help demonstrate the intent of the Conceptual Development Framework.
Columbus, Ohio TOD Regional Demonstration Project
ACP, working with the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC), the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA), and the City of Columbus, tested public opinion about mobility and land use by demonstrating the application of transit-oriented design (TOD) principles to three different and distinct sites (urban, developed, developing) within the region.
Highlights:
- By engaging a diverse group of residents in a focus group format, ACP was able to gain an understanding of mobility patterns, and attitudes about conventional and traditional development patterns and the application of TOD design principles within the residents' community.
- The results of the TOD regional Demonstration Project were used in the community awareness and urban design component of the preliminary engineering study for the Region's North Corridor Light Rail Study.
